The hierarchy of sleep
Sleep is something most of us have come to accept as necessary especially as we grow older. I still remember the times where we bedtimes were still regulated, and we would always whine about wanting to stay up late. Of course, that was a time before the responsibilities that came with adulthood. Despite being adults that are still unwritten rules of conduct that demands so much of our time. Sometimes those rules are more important than personal health in some ways. it is interesting how different people evaluate their sleep in different ways.
In my own culture the saying goes as "go to bed early wake up early". The saying reflects this idea of a orderly schedule. However, that isn't always the case for me. Sleeping early often causes me to forget things more often as I tend to sleep deeply and thus further breaking up certain flows in moods and progress. contrasting this with Japan's sleep culture i feel like it is less obligatory but rather a trend that people strive for. This is also a bit difference in America as well.
In America there is this feeling of fake it tills you make it. Most people have a tendency to drink coffee not because they like it or anything of that sort but more so that it has become a essential to not crash out throughout the day. the emphasis on making sure you don't look sleepy in public or workspaces old moods through the day. On that note once a pattern is established the fatigue is less and less felt. This altitude of hiding your fatigue i feel like is less seen in public space then compared to other countries.
For me it is the opposite, I drink coffee because I like it rather than needing it to function, but it is interesting to know that you aren't allowed to look sleepy in American culture.
